I was raised praying before meals. And I'm not going to lie, as a kid it was an inconvenient task to finish so we could just eat already! As an adult, my husband and I continued the tradition, but it still felt stale. Our prayers became rote and carried no real gratitude.
About a year ago, something in me switched and I found myself saying, "Let's give thanks" before meals instead of "Let's pray." As simple as that change was, it sparked something in my heart. It required that I slow down and really extend gratitude for the blessings on our table, whether they be a home-cooked meal or take-out spread on paper wrappers.
Thanks to a friend at work, I now have another tool in my tool box, The Thank You Song. I wanted to share it with you today, just in case you need to change up your mealtime prayers, too! You sing it to the tune of the first and second line of Old McDonald Had a Farm (Old McDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.)
Thank You, thank You, thank You God
Thank You God for ________.
Fill in the blank and repeat as many times as you like! My kids have loved using this as our mealtime prayer. They have thanked God for our food, family, friends, toys, prayer and love. It does my Momma heart so much good to hear my children singing their gratitude to their Heavenly Father.
